A strong, thoughtful return with a quiet sense of power.

Coming from the heart of Southwest Virginia, after an over ten-year split from their debut, Americana and folk-rock group, Matt Jones and The Bobs have emerged with two new singles, “You Stood Still” and this most recent one, “Wicked Ways.”
“Wicked Ways” feels like a late-afternoon chat on a porch: unhurried, honest, and shaped by the lessons of time and past mistakes. The song doesn’t aim for drama. Instead, it finds something more personal—acceptance. (“What would we become?”)
Songwriting: reckoning without regret
The lyrics are where “Wicked Ways” stands out. Matt Jones writes with hindsight, looking at the gap between who we were and who we are now. The main idea isn’t dramatic redemption but something more subdued and real: living with your past instead of trying to change it.
The song shows emotional maturity. It doesn’t glamorize wild youth or judge it harshly. Instead, it treats those experiences as important steps in growing up. This subtle approach gives the track its depth. It’s more about understanding than confessing.
Musically, “Wicked Ways” keeps things simple. The arrangement is open, giving each instrument room. The guitars have a gentle edge and add a warm, familiar feeling.
The chorus stands out. It’s not loud or explosive but has a quiet, anthemic quality and a melody that sticks with you after the song ends. This chorus grows stronger the more you hear it.
The band avoids overproducing the song. Its emotional core stays clear, never hidden by studio polish. It feels natural, as if they wanted to keep small imperfections instead of smoothing everything out.
A reunion with purpose
What makes “Wicked Ways” stand out is that it comes from real distance and reflection. It doesn’t sound like a band trying to relive old successes. Instead, they’ve come back with something meaningful to share. Their experience shows in every line and chord. (“Things we were proud of, when we were young…”)
You can hear it in how the band holds back. This song isn’t about trying to be young again. It’s about understanding what happened after those years. That view gives the song real emotional honesty.
Matt Jones shares: “The song is our nod to family, forgiveness, and the strength it takes to become better men. It’s about looking back without shame and owning where we came from, but also who we’ve grown into. It celebrates brotherhood and grace during a period of outgrowing our past without forgetting it.”
Where it fits
“Wicked Ways” doesn’t shout for attention, but wins you over little by little. That’s why it works. It refines the style, focusing on storytelling, atmosphere, and emotional honesty over flash.
What stays with you is the song’s point of view. Growth here isn’t about forgetting the past, but about carrying it in a new way. In that sense, “Wicked Ways” comes across less like a comeback and more like a quiet statement of purpose:
We’re still here. We’ve changed. And that is what matters.
