12 months, 12 artists

January is over, we are now well into February, so goodbye David Bowie and hello Pink Floyd.

At the end of last year, I looked at my Spotify “Your 2019” playlist and thought … “Boring”. It really consisted of too many bands I listened to while in the shower or driving in to work. Basically a lot of Weezer. And because of my end-of-year decision she had made easily the album of the year, Lana Del Rey.

I like to think of myself as a musicologist but, to be honest, it kind of dawned on me how there really are quite a few bands and artists who I really know… but don’t know.

So for 2020, I thought I’d dedicate one month to an artist or band who I really liked, but hadn’t really dived into the depth of their earlier work or perhaps albums I just had never listened to but really should have. “On the Beach” by Neil Young. “Low” by David Bowie. “The Piper at the Gates of Dawn” by Pink Floyd”. Most of Led Zeppelin’s catalog. Just four quick examples.

So now it’s February. Pink Floyd.

The Dark Side of the Moon. Wish You Were Here. Animals, and finally, one of my … probably favourites (of all time), The Wall. (OK, I don’t need to really listen to The Wall).

Pink Floyd definitely isn’t an easy band to listen to in the shower, no. You need silence and headphones. I’d say a lot of their work does require a… cohesive listen. No snippets.

The rest of the year? Well a mixture of introspection, fun, rock and funk. Fun.

I’ll be honest. I’m not sure how Christmas with Leonard Cohen will go down.
